Limpopo and Mpumalanga, South Africa

Kruger safari, the three-night shape.

Three nights in the bush done properly looks like this: two drives a day, a long rest in the heat of the afternoon, and no attempt to fill the middle of the day. The lodge carries the schedule and the guide carries the plan. Every number on this page is a planning band, not a quote. The live rates come from the trade and Lizanne confirms them before you commit.

Day by day.

Three nights, four days, one lodge. The two drives a day are the whole point, so the shape keeps the middle hours free and puts you back in the vehicle when the animals move: early morning, and again from late afternoon into the dark.

  1. Day 1

Land, drop the bags, and take the first drive.

Fly into Skukuza Airport or Kruger Mpumalanga International, or drive the four to five hours from Johannesburg. Either way, aim to be at the lodge by early afternoon. Most lodges run the evening drive from about 16h00, and that drive is real safari, not a warm-up. Take it.

Dinner is at the lodge and the guide sets the next morning's wake-up call. Expect a very early start, often before 05h00 in summer and closer to 05h30 in winter.

  2. Day 2

Two drives, and the middle of the day off.

The morning drive runs three to four hours, with a coffee stop in the bush. Back at the lodge for a late breakfast, then the heat. Read, swim, sleep. The animals are resting in the middle of the day and so should you.

The afternoon drive leaves around 16h00 and returns after dark, with a sundowner stop and a spotlight on the way home. Night drives are where the smaller animals show up: genet, civet, bushbaby, and often the cats on the move.

  3. Day 3

The bush walk, then the best evening of the three.

Most lodges offer a guided walking safari on one morning. Do it. You see tracks, dung, birds and plants that the vehicle drives straight past, and you learn to read the ground a little. It runs two to three hours at an easy pace, with an armed ranger in front.

The afternoon drive on day three is the one to ask for the specific thing you have not seen yet. Tell the guide at breakfast. The reserve tracks sightings between vehicles all day, so a request in the morning is a realistic ask by the evening.

  4. Day 4

One last drive, then the road out.

The final morning drive usually ends with breakfast back at the lodge, then check-out around 10h00 or 11h00. If you are driving, that puts you in Johannesburg early evening. If you are flying, the midday departure out of Skukuza is the easy one.

Straight home from here is fine. The alternative is one extra night on the escarpment, on the way back, and that is the add-on below.

  5. The add-on

The lowveld day: the Panorama Route.

Add a night in Graskop or Hazyview at the end and drive the escarpment. The Blyde River Canyon, Bourke's Luck Potholes, God's Window and the old mining town of Pilgrim's Rest all sit on one loop, and it is a full day if you do it without hurrying. The Three Rondavels viewpoint is the one people remember.

It pairs neatly because the drive home from the escarpment to Johannesburg is shorter than the drive home from the reserve. Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre near Hoedspruit is a good stop if you are travelling with children.

The other add-on is not a drive. Two nights at Victoria Falls on the Zambezi sits in front of this safari or behind it, one hour forty five minutes from Johannesburg with no clock change, and the Victoria Falls page carries the fees, the flow readings and the two-night shape.

Indicative planning bands.

Per person sharing, from Johannesburg. Planning ranges built from the trade's published shoulder-season safari pricing, not prices. The live number comes back on WhatsApp.
Shape Basis Nights Indicative band
Sabi Sands, three nights Four-star lodge, shared vehicle, two drives a day, all meals 3 from R 18,500 pp
Sabi Sands, four nights Four-star lodge, shared vehicle, two drives a day, all meals 4 from R 23,400 pp
Sabi Sands and the lowveld Five-star lodge, private vehicle, three safari nights plus one escarpment night and the Panorama Route day 4 from R 31,900 pp

Includes the return flights from Johannesburg, the lodge nights, the game drives and all meals at the lodge. Excludes travel insurance, drinks beyond the house pour, spa treatments, gratuities and the malaria prophylaxis you should discuss with your travel clinic. The dry winter months run busier and dearer than the rest of the year, and the September to October peak sits above these bands. Lizanne flags the difference in the indicative options, before you choose anything. Malaria prevention for the park, and the certificate rule for the route, are set out on health before you fly.

How this page stays honest.

  • Bands, not quotes.

Every number here is a planning range. Nothing on this page is a live rate and nothing here is bookable on its own.

  • Verified before it is offered.

No lodge reaches you as fact until availability, rate and season have been checked live. Anything unchecked is labelled an example, subject to live confirmation.

  • Real places only.

The Sabi Sand, the Kruger National Park, the Blyde River Canyon and every stop on this page are real, named places. No invented lodge is added.

  • One person at the end.

Lizanne van Niekerk, a named human travel consultant, takes the brief, books and confirms. Free to the traveller.
