Dates

Six long weekends in 2027, and only one of them is four days.

South Africa sets twelve public holidays a year, and where they fall decides how much of the year is actually available for a trip. This page takes the 2027 dates from the Public Holidays Act, applies the one rule the Act adds, which is that a holiday falling on a Sunday moves a holiday to the Monday, and then joins the holidays to the weekends they touch. The result is six runs of three days or more, four midweek holidays that need a leave day to be worth anything, and one Saturday holiday that gives nothing back at all. Every date below was read from the government's own page on 4 November 2026, and the arithmetic is printed so that anyone can repeat it.

The six runs of three days or more

A long weekend here is a run of consecutive days that are Saturday, Sunday or a public holiday, three days or longer. Nothing else is counted, and no leave day is counted. The last two columns read the season calendar on our own destination pages, so they say what the calendar says rather than what a brochure would like it to say.

2027 public holidays joined to the weekends they touch, and the season each month records
The run Days off The holiday that makes it At peak that month Marked avoid that month
Friday 1 to Sunday 3 January 3 New Year's Day on the Friday Cape Town and the Winelands, Garden Route, Zanzibar, Dubai Kruger
Saturday 20 to Monday 22 March 3 Human Rights Day on the Sunday, and the Monday the Act gives for it Cape Town and the Winelands, Garden Route, Dubai Kruger, Zanzibar
Friday 26 to Monday 29 March 4 Good Friday, Easter Sunday inside it, and Family Day on the Monday Cape Town and the Winelands, Garden Route, Dubai Kruger, Zanzibar
Saturday 7 to Monday 9 August 3 National Women's Day on the Monday Kruger, Garden Route, Mauritius, Zanzibar Dubai
Friday 24 to Sunday 26 September 3 Heritage Day on the Friday Kruger, Garden Route, Mauritius, Zanzibar Dubai
Saturday 25 to Monday 27 December 3 Christmas Day on the Saturday, Day of Goodwill on the Sunday and the Monday after it Cape Town and the Winelands, Dubai None

Six runs, and the count is a count of runs rather than of holidays. The twelve holidays produce fourteen days off once the two Mondays are added, Human Rights Day on 22 March and Day of Goodwill on 27 December, and those fourteen days land in six clusters. Five of the six clusters are three days. One is four, and it is the Easter one.

The four day one is Easter, and it is the only one

26 to 29 March: four days, no leave

Good Friday falls on 26 March 2027, Easter Sunday on 28 March, and Family Day on the Monday, 29 March. Add the Saturday between them and the run is four days long with no leave booked. It is the only run of four in the year, and it is the one the trade will price as an Easter week rather than as an ordinary long weekend.

The dates move every year, because Easter is set by the ecclesiastical moon rather than by a fixed date. Nothing in this table can be carried across to 2028, and the government's own page says so in a footnote to the Easter rows.

For a family, this one is inside a school window

Term one closes on Friday 19 March 2027 and term two opens on Tuesday 6 April, so the school window runs from 20 March to 5 April. Easter sits inside it. 26 to 29 March is therefore not a separate long weekend for anyone with school age children: it is the middle weekend of a 17 day window, and the travel decisions belong to the window rather than to the four days.

That matters for price. The four day run at Easter and the seventeen day window that contains it pull the same traffic, and the earlier of the two is what fills first. The school windows themselves are set out in full on the school holidays page.

Two holidays cost a weekday and give nothing back

The Act moves a holiday only when it falls on a Sunday. A holiday on a Saturday is not moved, so a Saturday holiday is a day the country is closed on a day it was already closed. In 2027 that happens twice, and only one of the two is rescued.

The two Saturday holidays in 2027, and what the Act does with each
Holiday Falls on What the Act gives back
Workers' Day, 1 May Saturday Nothing. There is no Monday rule for a Saturday, so the holiday adds no weekday to the calendar at all.
Christmas Day, 25 December Saturday The Saturday itself gives nothing back, but Day of Goodwill falls on the Sunday, 26 December, so the Act moves a holiday to Monday 27 December.

Workers' Day is the one holiday in the year that adds nothing to the working calendar. Christmas is saved by the holiday that follows it, not by any rule about Saturdays.

The four midweek holidays, and the shortest leave that fixes them

Four holidays fall on a Tuesday, a Wednesday or a Thursday, which means they arrive attached to an ordinary weekend at one end and to nothing at the other. The table gives the shortest stretch of leave that turns each one into a real break. It was found by trying every combination of one and of two working days next to the holiday and keeping the one that produces the longest run for the fewest leave days, so the answer is not a preference.

Each midweek holiday in 2027, with the leave that produces the longest run for the fewest days booked
Holiday Leave to book Days off The run
Freedom Day, Tuesday 27 April 2 5 Monday 26 April and Wednesday 28 April booked, Saturday 24 to Wednesday 28 April
Workers' Day, Saturday 1 May 2 4 Thursday 29 and Friday 30 April booked, Thursday 29 April to Sunday 2 May
Youth Day, Wednesday 16 June 2 5 Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 June booked, Saturday 12 to Wednesday 16 June
Day of Reconciliation, Thursday 16 December 2 5 Wednesday 15 and Friday 17 December booked, Wednesday 15 to Sunday 19 December

Two leave days is the cheapest any of the four can be made, and the reason differs by holiday. On Freedom Day one leave day, the Monday 26 April, already buys four days. On Day of Reconciliation one leave day, the Friday 17 December, buys four as well. On Workers' Day one leave day buys three, because the Saturday holiday is a day the country was closed anyway. On Youth Day one leave day buys only two, which makes the Wednesday in June the worst placed holiday of the four and the one that needs two days booked to be worth the trip.

The one date where the published list and the Act disagree

The government's public holidays page prints the 2027 list, and it prints the observed Monday for Human Rights Day as 22 March. It does not print the observed Monday for Day of Goodwill, which falls on Sunday 26 December 2027 and therefore moves a holiday to Monday 27 December under the same rule and the same Act.

We have taken the Act over the list on that one date, because the Act is what creates the holiday and the list is a summary of it. The consequence is the third day in the 25 to 27 December run. Anyone planning that week should confirm it with the employer before booking a return flight on Monday 27 December, and we would say the same about any date whose only support is a page that does not print its own reading date.

This is the only place on the page where the two sources do not agree. Every other date in the six runs is printed on both.

What a long weekend cannot do

Three days is a real amount of time and it is less time than most people think once the travel is counted. These are the limits, stated plainly.

  1. Three days is one destination and no moving. A Friday to Sunday run leaves two usable days on the ground if you fly on the Friday morning, and one if you fly after work. A two centre trip does not fit, and a long haul does not fit at all.
  2. Four days is the first run that crosses a border comfortably. The Easter run is the only one of the six that can take a flight of more than four hours without the trip becoming a transit with a bed in it.
  3. Six runs are six queues. Every employer in the country reads the same twelve dates, so a three day weekend is the most expensive three days of its month. The month, not the destination, sets that.
  4. The seasons do not move to suit the holiday. March is marked avoid for Kruger and Zanzibar on our own calendar, and the March run is the one that carries two of the year's six long weekends. The dates are fixed; the destination is the variable.

The sources, with the date each was read

One government page carries both the list and the rule, and one Act carries the rule itself. Both were read on 4 November 2026.

Easter Sunday 2027 falls on 28 March. The date is computed on this site from the Gregorian algorithm rather than copied from a diary, and the script that does it, along with the run detection and the leave search, is the same script that prints this table. A page that prints a derivation can be checked. A page that prints a list can only be believed.
