Dates
Four school windows in 2027, and the shortest one is nine days.
A family trip is not planned around a month, it is planned around a gap between two school terms. This page takes the term dates the Department of Basic Education has published for 2027, works out the four gaps between them, and prints the arithmetic so that anyone can check it against the source. The next gap is the December 2026 one, which opens on 10 December. The four below are the 2027 ones. Every date was read from the department's own pages on 3 November 2026.
The four windows, worked out from the term dates
The department publishes when each term opens and closes. A window is the run of days from the day after one term closes to the day before the next one opens, and it includes both weekend days at each end. That is why the numbers here are larger than the "three weeks off" that people say out loud.
| The window | First day to last day | Days | Nights | Public holidays inside it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Autumn, after term one | Saturday 20 March to Monday 5 April 2027 | 17 | 16 | Human Rights Day on Sunday 21 March and the Monday 22 March that follows it, Good Friday 26 March, Easter Sunday 28 March and Family Day 29 March. |
| Winter, after term two | Saturday 26 June to Monday 19 July 2027 | 24 | 23 | None. Youth Day on 16 June falls inside term two, not inside the break. |
| Spring, after term three | Saturday 2 October to Sunday 10 October 2027 | 9 | 8 | None. Heritage Day on Friday 24 September falls inside term three, so it makes a long weekend in the term rather than a break between terms. |
| Summer, after term four | Saturday 11 December 2027 until the 2028 year opens | not fixed | not fixed | Day of Reconciliation 16 December, Christmas Day on Saturday 25 December, Day of Goodwill on Sunday 26 December and the Monday 27 December that follows it. |
The term dates behind the table: term one runs (11) 13 January to 19 March, term two 6 April to 25 June, term three 20 July to 1 October and term four 11 October to (8) 10 December. The two bracketed dates are the days the department sets aside for staff before learners arrive and after they leave, which is why the learner year is the shorter of the two readings on each of those two terms.
The nine day window is the one that catches people
2027 is not 2026
In 2026 term three closed on 23 September, the day before Heritage Day, and the break that followed ran into the first week of October, with term four opening on 6 October. In 2027 term three runs to 1 October, nine days later in the year, and term four opens on 11 October. The break between them is 2 to 10 October: nine days, eight nights, and no public holiday inside it to stretch it further.
Nine days is enough for a domestic trip and tight for a long haul. Flying to an Indian Ocean island on a Saturday and back the following Sunday gives seven full days on the ground once the travel days are taken out. That is a real holiday, and it is not the same holiday as the 24 day winter window, so the two should not be priced or planned as if they were.
The autumn window carries four days off inside seventeen
The 17 day window in March and April 2027 contains Human Rights Day, the Monday that follows it, Good Friday and Family Day. That is four weekdays that most of the country has off, packed into a window that was already long enough for a trip. Easter Sunday falls on 28 March, between Good Friday and Family Day.
The consequence is that this window behaves like a longer one for anyone travelling domestically, and like a peak week for anyone travelling anywhere that South Africans go at Easter. Both things are true at once. The dates are fixed and published, so the only variable left is how early the plan is made.
Which of the six trips suits which window
This table is a pairing, not a promise. It takes the peak, workable and avoid months our own destination calendar records for each trip, and asks a single question of each window: does this trip sit in its peak season on these dates? Where the answer is no, the cell says what the calendar says instead of smoothing it over.
| The trip | 20 Mar to 5 Apr | 26 Jun to 19 Jul | 2 to 10 Oct | 11 Dec onward |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cape Town and the Winelands | Peak. March and April are both peak months. | Workable. June and July are workable, not peak. | Peak. October is a peak month. | Peak. December is a peak month. |
| Kruger safari | Workable. April is workable, and March is marked avoid. | Peak. June and July sit inside the May to October peak. | Peak. October is the last peak month of the run. | Workable. December is workable, not peak. |
| Garden Route drive | Peak. March is peak, and the calendar records nothing to avoid in any month. | Peak. June is peak and is the month the whales start. | Peak. October is peak. | Peak. December is peak. |
| Mauritius beach week | Workable. April is workable with no caveat recorded. | Peak. June and July sit inside the May to November peak. | Peak. October is peak. | Workable. December is workable with no caveat recorded. |
| Zanzibar slow week | Avoid. April is inside the long rains, and March is when they start. | Peak. July is peak, and June is workable as the dry season starts. | Peak. October is peak. | Workable. December is workable as the short rains fade. |
| Dubai stopover | Peak. March and April are both peak months. | Avoid. June and July are inside the four avoid months of summer heat. | Workable. October is workable and still hot at midday. | Peak. December is peak. |
Two pairings are worth naming because they are the ones a family gets wrong. The winter window is the best window of the four for Kruger and Zanzibar and the worst for Dubai, which is the reverse of what the price of a December Dubai flight suggests. The autumn window is peak for Cape Town, the Garden Route and Dubai, and the long rains make it the one window where Zanzibar should be left out.
What the calendar cannot tell you
Dates are the easy half. The hard half is that a school window is the same two or three weeks for every family in the country, and the trade prices the seats accordingly. A window is not a discount, it is a queue.
- The December window opens first. It is the longest break in the year and the one that most families use for the long trip, so it is the window where the choice of accommodation narrows earliest. The 2028 opening date is not yet published, so the window's last day cannot be fixed yet either.
- The nine day window is a domestic window in practice. Two travel days out of nine leaves seven on the ground. That is the shape of a Garden Route drive or a Kruger stay, not the shape of a trip that crosses six time zones.
- The autumn window is an Easter window. Four weekdays off inside seventeen days pulls the whole country's travel into the same week. The dates are fixed; the plan is the only moving part.
- Term dates are published, and they can be amended. The department publishes the calendar by notice, and a notice can be changed. We re-read the source rather than trusting a page that does not print its reading date, including this one.
The pairing above uses our own calendar's peak, workable and avoid months. It is our judgement laid on published season data, and it is the only part of this page that is judgement rather than a quoted date. Where the two disagree, the date wins.
The sources, with the date each was read
Two official pages, both read on 3 November 2026. No blog, no forum, no competitor's summary of the calendar.
- South African Government: school calendar, carrying the 2026 and 2027 term dates and the school day counts
- Department of Basic Education: 2027 calendar for public schools, the published notice behind the term dates
- South African Government: public holidays, carrying the 2027 list and the Sunday-to-Monday rule in the Public Holidays Act, 1994
The 2026 school calendar was published on 26 February 2025, and the 2027 calendar was published on the same day. The department's publications page listed those two calendars and no 2028 edition when it was read, which is why the last row above says the end of the December 2027 window is not fixed rather than printing a date it does not have.
Send the window. We will tell you which of the six fits it.
The dates your school closes and opens are enough to start. Everything after that is a conversation.
-
Free to the traveller.
The planning lane costs you nothing. A plan that never becomes a booking costs nothing either.
-
One named human.
Lizanne van Niekerk plans it and books it. She is the person you message on the day of travel.
-
Dates before prices.
A window is fixed by the school, not by the trade. We start with the dates and only then look at what the trip costs.
Read the month by month calendar behind the pairing above, or the family trips page for what changes when children travel, or the six long weekends of 2027 if the trip is a short one that has to fit between two ordinary weeks.
