Paperwork
The paperwork ends more trips than the price does, and no travel agent decides it.
Seven trips sit on this site and four of them cross a border. This page does not give immigration advice and will not hand you a web page to stand at a counter with. What it does is narrower and more useful: it names the authority that actually decides entry to each trip, quotes what that authority publishes for a South African passport, and dates the reading. Every quotation below was fetched on 2 November 2026 and is re-fetched by a script before this page is allowed to deploy, so a page that goes stale fails its own check.
The seven trips, and who decides entry to each
Three of the seven never reach a border, and those rows are short for a reason. The other four each hand the decision to a different department, and only one of them makes that department's published position easy to find.
| The trip | Who decides entry | What that authority publishes |
|---|---|---|
| Cape Town and the Winelands | Nobody. There is no border. | Nothing to clear. The airline checks identity before boarding, and a passport answers that check. |
| Kruger safari | Nobody. There is no border. | Nothing to clear. Skukuza and Kruger Mpumalanga are domestic airports. |
| Garden Route drive | Nobody. There is no border. | Nothing to clear. The car crosses no frontier between Cape Town and Gqeberha. |
| Mauritius beach week | Passport and Immigration Office, Port Louis. | The office's country list records South Africa as “No visa required”. Its travel requirements page sets out what every arriving person must hold. |
| Zanzibar slow week | Immigration Services Department of Tanzania. | “SADC member countries” are among the nationals not required to apply for a visa, and South Africa is a SADC member state. |
| Victoria Falls | Department of Immigration, Zimbabwe. | South Africa is listed in Category A, the countries whose nationals “do not require a visa to enter the country”. |
| Dubai short break | Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, and the Dubai residency authority, GDRFA. | The official portal prints the six month passport rule and says the lists of countries eligible for a visa on arrival “may vary from time to time”. It prints no position for a South African passport on the page read here, so this page prints none either. |
The last row is the honest one to sit with. A published list that changes, read on one day, is not the same thing as a decision taken by an officer at a desk. The three guide pages that deal with the rest of the trip are getting there, which prices the journey in days, how long to go, which prices the nights, and two centres, which is the page to read if your trip crosses a border twice.
What the arrival desk asks for, in the authority's own words
Four items come up at every one of the three borders, and the authorities print them differently. The cells below are quotations, not paraphrases. Where a page did not print a requirement, the cell says so rather than filling the gap.
| What is checked | Mauritius | Tanzania, for Zanzibar | United Arab Emirates, for Dubai |
|---|---|---|---|
| The passport dates | “valid beyond the intended period of stay” | “at least six months and at least one unused visa page” | “at least 6 months from the date of entry into the UAE” |
| The ticket home | “a valid return passage ticket” | “Visitors MUST show their Return Ticket upon arrival” | Not stated on the page read here |
| Somewhere to stay | “a confirmed hotel booking or sponsorship for accommodation” | Not stated on the page read here | Not stated on the page read here |
| Money for the stay | “adequate funds to meet the cost of his/her stay” | Not stated on the page read here | Not stated on the page read here |
A blank cell is a fact about the page, not about the border. The officer at a Tanzanian or Emirati desk can ask for a booking and a return ticket whether or not the web page says so, and the safe reading of all three pages is that you carry all four items on every one of the four cross-border trips.
The three that end at the counter
The expiry that clears one border and fails another
Mauritius asks for a passport valid beyond your stay. Tanzania asks for six months of validity and one unused visa page. The Emirates ask for six months from the day you enter. A passport with four months left on it satisfies the Mauritian wording and fails the other two, which is why the date to check is the one on the last border you cross, not the first flight you board.
This is the one item on the page that cannot be fixed at an airport. A missing form can be filled in on a phone. A passport that expires in four months is a planning decision you make weeks earlier, or a trip you lose.
The ticket home and the address
Tanzania's guidance puts it in capitals: visitors must show their return ticket on arrival. Mauritius requires a valid return passage ticket and a confirmed hotel booking or sponsorship. A one-way ticket is a plan, not a document, and the desk is checking that you intend to leave as much as that you intended to arrive.
The form, before the flight and not at it
Zimbabwe's immigration department lists South Africa in Category A and, on the same page, encourages travellers to complete the Zimbabwe Entry Declaration Form before travelling so that entry processing runs smoothly. Mauritius links a Mauritius All-in-One Travel Digital Form from the travel information menu of the same office that publishes the visa list. Both are free, both are done from a phone, and both are the kind of thing that turns a queue into a walk-through.
The officer, who is not this page
Entry is granted or refused by an immigration officer at the desk. No page on this site, and no consultant, can overrule that. What a consultant can do is check the four items above against your actual documents, six weeks out and again a week before you fly, and tell you when a passport needs renewing before a fare is paid.
The order to do it in
The order matters more than the timing. Each step below depends on the one above it, and doing them in this sequence is what stops a fare being paid against a passport that cannot travel.
- The passport dates, first. Read the expiry on every passport in the party and check it against the last border on the itinerary, not the first flight.
- The forms, second. The Zimbabwe Entry Declaration Form and the Mauritius All-in-One Travel Digital Form are done before travel, and neither asks for a decision from anyone else.
- The visa, third and only where it applies. Tanzania publishes an online application and an on-arrival option, and it prints which nationalities are exempt. Where a visa is required, the application runs before the fare, not after it.
- The flight, last. A fare bought before the three steps above is a bet on documents that have not been checked yet.
How this page stays honest: every quotation was read from the authority's own page on 2
November 2026, the date is printed on the page rather than hidden in a footer, and
scripts/paperwork-red-control.py re-fetches all five source pages and fails the
deploy if a quotation no longer appears. The sourcing is listed in full at the foot of this
page. Health is the other half of the same check, and it has its own page:
health before you fly.
What to put in the brief
Send these six lines
- The expiry date on each passport in the party.
- Whether any traveller holds a passport other than a South African one.
- The month you want to travel, and the nights you have.
- Whether the trip crosses a border twice, as Victoria Falls before a safari does.
- Whether any traveller is under eighteen, and who they are travelling with.
- Anything already booked, including flights.
What comes back, and when
A document check against the four items above, in writing, the same day. Where a passport is too close to expiry for the trip you have chosen, that arrives before the planning range does, because there is no point pricing a trip that cannot be boarded.
The visa position for your passport, and for every passport in the party, is confirmed by Lizanne at booking against the authority's page on the day. It is not copied from this page, which is why this page prints the date it was read.
The sources, with the date each was read
Five official pages and one dated list, all read on 2 November 2026. They are the whole basis of the quotations above, and none of them is a news article, a blog or a competitor's summary.
- Passport and Immigration Office, Mauritius: Travel Requirements
- Passport and Immigration Office, Mauritius: Visa Requirement Country-wise (PDF dated 22 June 2022)
- Immigration Services Department, Tanzania: eVisa guidelines
- Department of Immigration, Zimbabwe: Category A countries
- UAE Government official portal: check if you need a visa to enter the UAE
- SADC: member states
The SADC page is there for one reason: Tanzania's exemption is written for SADC member states rather than for named countries, so the exemption only means something once you can show that South Africa is one. That is the single inference on this page, and it is the reason the member state list is cited beside the Tanzanian guidance.
Send the passport dates. We will tell you which trips they clear.
Six lines are enough to start. If a passport rules a trip out, you will hear that first.
-
Free to the traveller.
The planning lane costs you nothing. A plan that never becomes a booking costs nothing either.
-
One named human.
Lizanne van Niekerk plans it and books it. She is the person you message on the day of travel.
-
Checked, not copied.
The visa position is confirmed against the authority's page on the day of booking, not taken from a guide page.
