Per person sharing
The basis under every price here is one traveller in a twin room.
Each of the six destination pages states its planning bands per person sharing. That phrase does more work than it looks like it does. It is the reason a week that reads as affordable for two can read very differently for one, and it is the thing a website price almost never explains. So this page states the basis in each destination page's own words, names the four travellers the basis does not fit, and tells you what the site can and cannot price for them. Every band below is the figure already published on that destination page, read out of it by a script rather than typed here.
What each page says its band is built on
The caption under each cost table is the destination page's own statement of the basis. It is reproduced here word for word, beside the entry band it governs. Read the last column first if you are travelling alone or in a group that is not a couple: it tells you what the number in the fourth column does and does not include.
| The trip | The entry shape | Nights | Band, per person sharing | What that page says the band is built on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cape Town and the Winelands | City only, three-star, one base, public day tours, no driver | 4 | from R 9,800 pp | Per person sharing, from Johannesburg. Planning ranges built from the trade's published shoulder-season pricing, not prices. |
| Kruger safari | Sabi Sands, three nights, four-star lodge, shared vehicle | 3 | from R 18,500 pp | Per person sharing, from Johannesburg. Planning ranges built from the trade's published shoulder-season safari pricing, not prices. |
| Garden Route drive | Self-drive, three-star, six nights from Cape Town to Gqeberha | 6 | from R 7,400 pp | Per person sharing, six nights, Cape Town to Gqeberha. Planning ranges built from the trade's published shoulder-season pricing for this route, not prices. |
| Mauritius beach week | Four-star, half board, north or west coast resort | 7 | from R 26,500 pp | Per person sharing, seven nights, return flights from Johannesburg included. Planning ranges built from the trade's published shoulder-season package pricing for the island, not prices. |
| Zanzibar slow week | Four-star, bed and breakfast, two nights Stone Town and five on the north coast | 7 | from R 22,800 pp | Per person sharing, seven nights, return flights from Johannesburg included. Planning ranges built from the trade's published shoulder-season package pricing for the island, not prices. |
| Dubai short break | Four-star, Deira or Bur Dubai, metro rather than a car | 4 | from R 14,200 pp | Per person sharing, four nights, return flights from Johannesburg included. Planning ranges built from the trade's published shoulder-season package pricing for the city, not prices. |
Three of the six captions say the return flight is included: Mauritius, Zanzibar and Dubai. The other three name Johannesburg as the origin and stop there, which is why the how long to go page warns against comparing a per-night figure that includes a fare with one that does not. None of the six says anything about the room beyond the sharing basis, and the room is where the next three questions come from.
The four travellers a per person sharing band does not fit
Per person sharing means two people in one room, each paying half of the room. It is the standard basis in the trade and the only basis on which the six pages publish a band. Four common travellers step outside it. None of them is priced on this site, and saying so is the point of the table.
| The shape | What this site publishes | Where that leaves the price | What to put in the brief |
|---|---|---|---|
| One traveller alone | Nothing. All six bands are per person sharing, so half of each band is the room, and a single traveller pays for the room | The single supplement is set by the hotel, per season and per room type, and some resorts waive it on some dates. A band printed here would be a guess wearing the clothes of a range | Say that you are travelling alone, and whether you would take a smaller room or a double to yourself |
| Three sharing | Nothing. No page prices a triple, and the room types that take three are a different booking from the twin the bands assume | Quoted on the third bed or the second room the hotel actually has, which changes with the property and the date | Say who the three are, and whether a third bed in one room is acceptable or the third person needs a room of their own |
| Two adults and a child in the room | Three of the six pages state that a child sharing with two adults is quoted separately: Mauritius, Zanzibar and Dubai. The other three, Cape Town, Kruger and the Garden Route, say nothing either way | A child rate depends on age, on the meal plan and on whether the room takes a third bed. It is never the adult band and it is never free | Give the ages of the children. Age, not height, decides the rate, and it decides it at the hotel's own cut-off |
| Four travellers in two rooms | Nothing directly, but the arithmetic is the bands above multiplied by four, once the two rooms are fixed | Two twins at the same hotel are usually the cheapest version of four. Two doubles, or a family room and a twin, move the number | Say whether the two rooms must be the same grade, and whether anyone in the party needs to be next door |
The half of that table worth remembering is the child row. Three destination pages tell you how a child sharing with two adults is quoted and three do not. This page does not paper over the gap: the three that are silent are listed as silent, and family trips is where the room configuration and the ages are worked through in full.
Why there is no single supplement figure on this page
Because it is not one number
A supplement is a hotel's own charge, set per property, per season and per room type. On the same island it can be a fifth of the band at one resort in May and nothing at all at another in September. A single figure here would be wrong more often than it was right, and this site prints only figures it can trace to a published source.
The same rule is why no page prices a third bed or a child. Those numbers exist, but they belong to a live quote against live availability, not to a planning range.
What you get instead, and when
Send the number of travellers and the ages, and the options come back on the same working day with the room each one is priced on. Where a single room or a third bed costs more, the difference is named in the option rather than discovered at the deposit.
If the supplement is the thing that decides the trip, say so in the first message. It is a smaller conversation when it starts first. See what it costs for the booking steps, and the four packages for what sits outside a band.
What to put in the brief
Send these six lines
- How many travellers, counted exactly, including children.
- The ages of any children, and whether they share your room.
- Whether anyone is travelling alone and needs a room of their own.
- Whether the rooms must be the same grade, or the same floor.
- The nights and the month, as on every other brief.
- A ceiling you will not cross, if you have one.
What comes back, and when
The closest shapes, each priced on the room it actually uses, with the single, third bed or second room called out as a line of its own where it applies. That arrives the same working day.
The binding price follows once Lizanne has confirmed availability with the trade, in writing. A plan that never becomes a booking costs you nothing.
Tell us who is travelling. The price follows from that.
Three lines are enough: how many travellers, the ages, and the nights.
